If you're around Sunnyside this weekend, I will be showing one of my collages in the juried art show "Portrait of the Exquisite," which will open Sunday, June 13 (as part of Queens Art Express) at Bliss Bistro (45-20 Skillman at 46th/Bliss). The show will be up until July 18. Also on Sunday, June 13, I'll be selling prints along with other Sunnyside Artists during a one-day art fair (Skillman Avenue at 44th Street; 1-5 p.m.). Poetry Writing Workshop with KC Trommer: September/October 2009

This class is open to those who are just beginning to write poetry and to more established writers interested in working with other poets in a small workshop setting.

In workshop, we will explore the individual voices of the poets in the class as well as the craft of writing—the technical skills a writer employs when composing—and the art of writing, in which a writer brings his or her unique vision to a poem.

We will work as a group to train our ears, eyes, and understanding to record the delights of the world as we experience it. In addition to reading and workshopping each other’s poems, we will also do close readings of poems both formal and innovative. We will use these primary texts as the basis for our own writing, investigating what we can learn from writers who have been slogging away at the hard work of writing well.

Workshopping each other’s work will be a significant part of class as we develop a critical vocabulary and approach to reading works-in-progress. Students will participate in thoughtful, constructive workshops of each other’s poems and respond to critiques of their own work with attentive, imaginative revisions.

Six Saturdays - September 19, 26 and October 3, 10, 17, 31

Beiderbecke was a famous jazz cornetist and composer who died on August 6, 1931 in his apartment at 43-30 46th Street. Paul Maringelli, who is a drummer, band leader, and composer, discovered this historical Sunnyside fact in 2001 and has been organizing the concerts every year since then.

Fluid - New Media Laboratory v.2

Fluid is a new media movement that focuses in the potential of emerging audiovisual artists, without consideration of gender or where they come from.
Fluid in its second edition, will continue collecting audiovisual pieces and ideas, and will present them in a collaboration with its partners; Local Project, Queens Museum of Art, el Museo del Barrio and the Moviehouse.

Fluid opens the scene to a new movement of audio visual & performing arts in educational and screening spaces that have cultural programming.

Local Project is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to building a forum for artists, creating synergy between their art work and the public. LP supports all forms of self-expression by providing an open space for artists without concern to their genre, medium, or provenance.

During the summer of 2009, thirteen writers of all levels and with roots from all over the world came together in Our Side to write about the worlds they live in, past and present.

After ten weeks of reading and discussing the work of contemporary writers,
experimenting with writing exercises, and engaging in group feedback, they will read to the public the results of their work. Their memoirs, narratives and personal essays will address issues of emigration, dislocation from homeland, assimilation to a new land, maintenance of cultural identity, and transnationalism.

The free public reading takes place 1:00pm on Sunday, August 16, 2009,
at TOPAZ ARTS, located at 55-03 39th Avenue in Woodside, Queens.

Facilitator: Nancy Agabian is the author of Me as her again: True Stories of an
Armenian Daughter, a memoir on her Armenian American family history. Currently, she
is working on a book about her experiences living in a community of artists in Yerevan, Armenia, and an article on the history of the Turkish and Armenian communities in Sunnyside, Queens. Since 1994, she has been teaching community-based writing workshops in Los Angeles, New York and Yerevan, Armenia. She teaches writing at CUNY Queens College and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York

BIOS:
Ari Banias has poems in recent or upcoming issues of Literary Imagination, EOAGH, The Cincinnati Review, Field, Aufgabe, Love Among the Ruins, The Portable Boog Reader, and others. He teaches writing and literature, sells books, and runs Uncalled-for Readings, a queer reading series in Brooklyn, NY.

James Hoff is an artist living in New York City. He is the co-founder and editor of Primary Information, a non-profit publisher devoted to printing artists' books and multiples by artists both young and old. He was the co-editor of 0 To 9: The Complete Magazine 1967 - 1969 (Ugly Duckling Presse) and the editor of Aram Saroyan's Complete Minimal Poems (Ugly Duckling Presse), winner of the William Carlos Williams Book of the Year Award. With Primary Information he has edited publications and multiples by John Cage, the Art Workers' Coalition, DISBAND, Dan Graham, Robert Filliou, Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Allan Kaprow, Dieter Roth, Seth Siegelaub, and Emmett Williams, among many others. He is the recent author of Topten (No Input Books) and co-author of Endless Nameless (No Input Books). Upcoming publications include Memoirs (No Input Books).

Patrick Lovelace is a poet, the publisher of Patrick Lovelace Editions, and the author of the blog By My Green Candle.

Lee Norton has work forthcoming in Hayden's Ferry Review, Sawbuck and Drunken Boat. A 2008 graduate of Wesleyan University, he lives in Brooklyn and works in New York.

Danny Snelson is an editor, writer, and archivist moving to Philadelphia. His online work can be found at UbuWeb, PennSound and Eclipse. He is the founder of Aphasic Letters (with Phoebe Springstubb) and No Input Books (with James Hoff). Forthcoming is an Autotypist edition of Testimony, an expanded recomposition in Deseret, the lost Mormon alphabet.

Jeremy James Thompson is a typographer and poet currently working in New York City. His work focuses on the process of collaboration, the reinvention of propaganda, and the defining of a practical avant-garde.

KC Trommer's poems have appeared in AGNI, The Antioch Review, Coconut, MARGIE, Octopus, The Sycamore Review and are forthcoming from Poetry East. A graduate of the MFA program at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, KC has been the recipient of an Academy of American Poets prize, as well as fellowships from the Maine Summer Arts Program, the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Prague Summer Program.

Make it to Makers Market - this weekend at the Socrates Sculpture Park

Friday, June 26 – Sunday, June 28: Presented by American Craft, The Noguchi Museum, R 20th Century and Socrates Sculpture Park, this open-air marketplace unfolds at the atmospheric sculpture garden, amid its State Fair exhibition. Inside tents, 30 artisans from across the country will be selling goods (Saturday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.), from one-of-a-kind glasses to jewelry to furniture. If you want to scoop up all the good stuff before the masses get to it, splurge on a $50 ticket for Friday evening’s preview (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.). Thursday, June 18, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM: Workshops

The workshops will be held at the Garden School. Reflecting the theme, Poetry & Memory, the Panel discussion will focus on the following ideas:

Memory is personal and collective. It plays a role in how we, personally and collectively, construct and understand our experiences and is often at the root of how we feel about our collective and individual selves. Because it makes the past tangible, poetry is one of the ways we make memory. It is why Wordsworth called poetry "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility," and why the poet David Barber has said that "the future of memory is more and more bound up with the future of poetry." These workshops will explore the role of memory in the making of poems and of poems in the making of memory.

The workshops are free, appropriate for all ages and levels of experience:

Nicole Cooley — How To Fasten to the Page the Voice
In this workshop �which takes its title from poet Frank Bidart�s description of his poetic practice-- we will explore poetic voice and how it works in our poems. We will discuss a range of issues, including writing about the self using deeply personal material, writing persona poems based on experiences outside of our own, and reading our own poems aloud. We�ll look briefly at poems by Ishle Park, Li-Young Lee and Sharon Olds.

Roger Sedarat — Memorable Rhyme: Recollecting the Past through Sound
This workshop examines the use of rhyme to recreate personal memory in the present moment of the poem, offering examples of formal verse as well as a practical exercise from the personal experiences of the participants.

Richard Jeffrey Newman — Sense Memory: Using the five senses to give presence to the past
Poems connect us to the experiences they embody by appealing to our senses, and it is often through our senses that our minds most powerfully connect the present in which we live to the past that we can only remember. Participants in this workshop will explore how using the five senses can make our memories come alive on the page.

Julio Marzan — Memory
Memory is the language that records how we interpret our lived experience. But memory is not a reliable narrator. We may not be honest with ourselves or want to confront, in that experience, something painful. If we mine memory to write a poem, we may use many poetic devices but that poem may not be honest, or in fact, a poem. As Marianne Moore wrote, ultimately we go to the poem to find "the genuine." Uncovering that genuineness begins by listening to the find that poem in the prosaic or even wildly imaginative layers of language of our first efforts. Ultimately, the language must deliver the poem to the reader, not the performance. The poem must ring inexplicably "true" and be portable, separate from the poet.

The panel discussion is open to the public and does not require pre-registration.

The JHPF open reading will be held at Terraza Cafe from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Sign-up for the open mic will open at 7:30pm and readings will start at 8pm. The reading will feature the Queens College Poetry MFA program and any members from the community who want to share their work.
